October 5, 2007 Card #144: Civic Coliseum in Knoxville
1) Billy Red Lyons got some retribution in the opener, scoring a submission win over Virgil. The bodyguard looked like he would pull off the win early on. Virgil applied the Million Dollar Dream, but Lyons ran him backwards into the turnbuckle to break the hold. The Flying Redhead took control and locked Virgil in the figure-four leglock to gain the submission. **
2) One half of the World Tag Team champions The Masked Superstar also got some revenge defeating Justin Credible. Superstar wanted this match after Credible had interfered in the match where Superstar and King Kong Bundy won the USWA World Tag Team titles from The Midnight Express and hit Superstar with his Singapore cane. Superstar controlled most of the action here, focusing the attack on Credible’s neck, using the spinning neckbreaker several times and even busting Justin open. It would be the neckbreaker that put Credible down for the three-count. Surprisingly, Jim Cornette and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan did not get too involved in this one. *¾
3) New Texas champion Greg Valentine scored a win over a former champion, Red Bastien. This one was back-and-forth with both men hitting their finishers and other specialty moves throughout. Valentine kicked out of Bastien’s atomic drop early on. At one point, Valentine went for the figure-four, but Bastien reversed it into a small package for a nearfall. “The Hammer” successfully applied the figure-four later to force a tapout on Bastien. ***¼
4) The other half of the World Tag Team champions King Kong Bundy teamed up with another Heenan Family member, Bob Orton, Sr. to get a win over “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka and Bruiser Brody. Snuka and Brody were hoping to get a win over one-half of the tag champs to move on toward a shot. Bundy got hit by both a Brody jumping knee drop and a picture perfect Superfly Leap. After the Leap, Bobby Heenan distracted Tommy Gilbert, allowing Orton to nail a knee to the back. Bundy recovered and hit the “Superfly” with an Avalanche, but Brody broke up the pin attempt. Bundy locked Snuka in a bear hug to wear him down, then tagged out to “The Big O.”. The duo hit a nice double team suplex on Snuka. Bundy nailed Brody in the corner with a forearm smash, while Orton made the cover and got the pin. **½
5) Before challenging for the World Tag Team titles, The Road Warriors scored a victory over the Team RPW duo of Frank Gotch and Dick Hutton. Gotch and Hutton worked over Animal for the first few minutes, scoring near wins with a Hutton side salto and the Gotch Toehold, but Animal managed to hold on in both cases. Hawk came back in and worked over Gotch, then tagged Animal back in. A Doomsday Device would put the Iowan down for the count and give The Legion of Doom the win. **
6) Rikidozan had his most competitive match to date in the USWA, but just got by Sabu in a bloody match. Sabu used his suicidal offense as his primary weapon, while Rikidozan blasted Sabu with various chops. Abdullah Farouk distracted Kevin Christian, while Sabu brought a steel chair in and then hit an Arabian facebuster. Sabu set up the chair in the middle, then went for the triple jump moonsault. His aim was off, but his leg came down across Rikidozan’s face, which busted him open. The move wasn’t enough for a pin, but Sabu went for the Camel Clutch instead. With his fingers pried into Rikidozan’s face, the blood flowed more. But the fans were behind the Japanese superstar and Rikidozan broke out of the hold, then nailed Sabu with some of his thunderous chops. One chop connected right with Sabu’s nose and drew blood on him as well. The two were exchanging blows in the middle, when Rikidozan hit a kick to the stomach. With Sabu bent over, Rikidozan bounced off the ropes and nailed a big chop to the back of Sabu’s neck. Rikidozan covered the fallen Sabu and got the win. *****
7) Giant Baba pinned “Playboy” Buddy Rose. Rose was getting beaten down and rolled out of the ring. While “Sensational” Sherri Martel distracted Tommy Gilbert on one side, Rose grabbed her purse and cracked Baba across the head with it. The giant dropped and Rose quickly went for a cover, but Baba got his foot on the ropes. Baba recovered and came back an angry giant. He signaled for his dreaded neckbreaker drop, but Rose bailed out, before Baba could connect. Baba successfully landed the neckbreaker drop a few minutes later and got the win. **
8) The Midnight Express beat The Killer Bees by DQ. B. Brian Blair and “Jumping” Jim Brunzell started off fast, hitting the Bee Sting on both “Beautiful” Bobby and “Loverboy” Dennis, but failed to score the pin. The Midnights came back and Eaton scored a nearfall after an elbow drop off the top rope on Blair. Blair bounced off the ropes, but was tripped up by Jim Cornette while Kevin Christian had his back momentarily turned. Brunzell tried to tell Christian about the interference, but he wouldn’t listen. Cornette started laughing at ringside, which infuriated “Jumping” Jim, who grabbed Cornette’s tennis racket and nailed both him and Justin Credible with it. Meanwhile in the ring, Eaton tagged out to Condrey and the two hit the Midnight Massacre on Blair. Brunzell jumped in the ring and nailed both Midnights with the racket, right in front of Christian, which naturally led to a disqualification. **¼
9) Nick Bockwinkel scored a win over rival Mil Mascaras, once again with some help from Bobby Heenan. The luchador started off fast, hitting one of his beautiful flying body presses on Bockwinkel for a two-count. Bock took over after ramming Mascaras’ leg into the ringpost. He worked over the leg, stomping on it on the ropes. Bockwinkel locked on the figure-four leglock. Mascaras fought it for over a minute. Heenan reached in and grabbed Bockwinkel’s hands for extra leverage, unbeknownst to Tommy Gilbert. Mascaras wouldn’t surrender, but the pain weakened him enough so that his shoulders were down. Bockwinkel scored a pin with the leglock. The Civic Coliseum erupted into boos. Heenan entered the ring to celebrate with his charge, but Mascaras knocked him out of the ring. He then nailed Bockwinkel with a big chop. Despite limping, Mascaras went up to the top turnbuckle. It looked like he was going to dive on Heenan on the floor, but then turned and nailed Bockwinkel with the flying body press. He got up and was able to dropkick Bockwinkel out of the ring. Bock hit his arm on the security railing as he fell out and was seen holding his arm. It turned out he suffered a minor arm injury, but isn’t expected to miss any matches. **
10) As reported on in the last update, Antonio Inoki defeated Ed “Strangler” Lewis to regain the USWA World Heavyweight title in the main event. This being the fourth meeting between the two, the two grapplers seemed to know each other, as they seemed to have counters for one another’s moves. Lewis locked on a double wristlock, but Inoki scampered to the ropes. “Strangler” was only able to throw Inoki once with his headlock and again Inoki broke free. The Japanese superstar made a comeback and hit two enzuigiris. But Lewis showcasing his renowned toughness, staggered to his feet. Inoki went for a third enzuigiri, but Lewis ducked and Inoki crashed to the mat. Lewis locked on a half nelson and went for a cover, but Inoki got his shoulder up. A few minutes later, Inoki came off the top with a big knee drop right to Lewis’ head, which busted the “Strangler” open. Inoki locked on the octopus hold. Lewis covered in blood, struggled for the ropes, but ultimately had to surrender. Jerry Calhoun went to hand Inoki the championship afterward, but Lewis grabbed the belt out of his hands. Fans wondered what the “Strangler’s” actions would be, but Lewis handed Inoki the belt, then raised his hand in victory. Both grapplers shook hands in a great show of sportsmanship and respect for one another. ***½

Thanks, guys! Darth Splatter, I figured the easiest way for people who hadn't read my thread for a while (or ever) was to link it to the other board. Hope you enjoy catching up. The last four months have seen a lot of action in the good old USWA.

Highlights from USWA Championship Wrestling on October 6:
• A video aired that was taped earlier in the week on location from Dallas. Bill Apter interviewed, “Dastardly” Danny Doring, who was in training for his Texas title match on October 19 against Greg “The Hammer” Valentine. Doring wants to be an “authentic” Texan and will be training in Dallas for the next couple of weeks. But his training doesn’t consist of wrestling training. This video showed him learning how to ride a horse! Actually Doring, to no one’s surprise made Cousin Luke ride the horse, while he and Virgil watched. • Speaking of the Dallas card, the great Argentinian wrestler Antonino Rocca will be in action! Rocca is coming to the U.S. to compete after competing in his native country in the promotion known as Titanes del Ring. He is a high flying sensation, who uses a lot of fancy footwork! Rocca has signed to wrestle on the last two USWA Dallas cards of the year. No word at this time as to whether Rocca will compete in other cities on the USWA circuit or not. • Another new wrestler will soon debut as well, as amateur great and former NWA World Jr. Heavyweight champion Danny Hodge has been announced as the newest member of Team RPW. Dick Hutton announced that Hodge is looking forward to new competition in the USWA, against opponents of any size. Frank Gotch announced that George Hackenschmidt’s broken ribs were more serious than originally thought. There is no timetable for his return. Hutton also announced that a huge rematch has been signed for October 19 in Dallas, as Dan “The Beast” Severn will put the Southern Heavyweight title on the line against The Sheik!
A huge night of great wrestling action will take place on October 12, when the USWA comes back to the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Evansville! • Before Dan Severn and The Sheik do battle for the Southern Heavyweight gold, they will take on an ally of the other man. The Sheik will take on long-time nemesis Frank Gotch. Sheik captured the Southern gold from Gotch back in April and Gotch is dying to join Team RPW teammates Severn and Dick Hutton as the elite group of wrestlers who have defeated The Sheik. Severn will do battle with Sheik’s nephew Sabu in a non-title bout. Sabu got quickly disqualified against Severn on Card #142 in Memphis, but “The Beast” sent Sabu to the back scared. These will certainly be two wild bouts! • Speaking of old rivals, “The Man of 1,000 Masks” Mil Mascaras is hoping to finally score a pin or submission on “The Big O.” Bob Orton, Sr. Orton is looking for some revenge for Mascaras’ attacks on Nick Bockwinkel. Will the luchador finally get the decisive win? • Despite an injured arm, Nick Bockwinkel will compete, as he battles Giant Baba. Baba holds two pinfall victories over Bockwinkel this year. Bockwinkel has asked the USWA Committee for the next shot at the World Heavyweight gold, since he hasn’t received a rematch yet. But Baba’s on a roll and would love a shot as well. Who will win this very important match? • The main event will be a huge (literally!) tag team match, as The Masked Superstar and King Kong Bundy make their first defense of the USWA World Tag Team titles against former champs The Road Warriors. These teams are 1-1 against each other, with The Legion of Doom being the only team to score a victory on the champs. Will the Road Warriors win this “rubber match” and a record third USWA Tag Team championship? Or will the Heenan Family hold on to the straps? Plus Rikidozan battles Team RPW member Dick Hutton, The Midnight Express, The Killer Bees, and more great bouts!

October 12, 2007 Card #145: Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Evansville
1) The opener was a wild tag bout, as The Killer Bees battled Cousin Luke and Virgil to a double disqualification. The Midnight Express, Jim Cornette, and Justin Credible watched the match from the aisle, as The Midnights will battle The Bees in a rematch from Card #144, next week in Dallas. Luke and Virgil scored nearfalls throughout the bout. Cornette couldn’t help himself and got involved, allowing Virgil to use brass knuckles on B. Brian Blair. The Bees donned the masks and pulled the old “switcharoo” to regain control. They hit Virgil with the Bee Sting, but Luke broke up the pin attempt. Virgil and Luke later regained control. With Luke in the ring, Cornette again distracted Paul Morton, which allowed Luke to bring in the lucky horseshoe and smack Blair with it, drawing blood from his bee mask. Luke went for a cover, but “Jumping” Jim came in to break it up. Virgil jumped in and he and Brunzell started trading punches. All four men started going at it, leaving Morton no choice but to disqualify both teams. Cornette and The Midnights laughed from the aisle at The Bees’ inability to win the match. ****
2) Texas champion Greg Valentine pinned “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka. This match saw both men attempt top rope maneuvers, but in more cases, both failed to hit! Snuka went for a Superfly Leap, but “The Hammer” rolled out of the way. Snuka landed hard and Valentine applied the figure-four leglock. Snuka managed to reach the ropes. Snuka made a comeback and went to the top again, but Capt. Lou Albano yelled at him from the floor. “Superfly” started yelling back, which allowed Valentine the chance to recover and shove Snuka, crotching him on the top rope. Valentine pulled Snuka off the buckle and executed a shoulder breaker. “The Hammer” floated over into a cover and got the three-count. **
3) Justin Credible scored a big win, defeating “Playboy” Buddy Rose. Rose looked aggressive early, trying to score a much needed win. But Justin came back. Jim Cornette distracted Tommy Gilbert, allowing Credible to bring the Singapore cane into the ring. But with Gilbert tied up, “Sensational” Sherri Martel snuck in the ring and played tug-of-war with the cane. Credible got the cane, but went backwards into a school boy roll-up from Rose. Gilbert turned around to make the count, but Credible kicked out. Gilbert threw the cane out of the ring. The bodyguard ended up not needing it, as he scored the victory on Rose after That’s Incredible. *¾
4) Rikidozan is now 9-0, after defeating Richard Hutton in a great wrestling match. Hutton was in control early on and looked on his way to victory, even applying the abdominal stretch, but Rikidozan held on. The Japanese superstar scored some nearfalls after a flying head scissors and some stiff overhead chops, as well as with one of his hiplocks. Rikidozan picked up Hutton and dropped him with a big scoop slam, then turned into a cover and got the pin. Both wrestlers shook hands afterwards. ***½
5) The Sheik scored another victory, and in rather decisive fashion, over rival Frank Gotch. Gotch was aggressive early on, but a momentary distraction from Abdullah Farouk allowed The Sheik to throw a fireball at Gotch. Gotch rolled out of the ring, holding his face. Sheik pounded on Gotch, applying the Camel Clutch for several minutes, pounding away on Gotch’s burned face, eventually drawing blood. Gotch fought hard, but eventually conceded to the Clutch. *
6) The Flying Redheads rebounded from a recent slump to score a big win in becoming only the second team in USWA history to score a pin or submission win over The Midnight Express. “Beautiful” Bobby and “Loverboy” Dennis tagged in and out early on, and it looked like they were going to score a quick win over The Redheads, as they hit both the Rocket Launcher and two Midnight Massacres on Red Bastien, but the former Texas champ held on. Billy Red Lyons tagged in and locked Condrey in the figure-four leglock, but Condrey made the ropes. From this point, it was mainly The Redheads tagging in and out, using several double team moves on the former champs. Midway through the bout, The Killer Bees were seen watching from the aisle. Lyons locked Eaton in the sleeperhold and it looked like Eaton was going out. Jim Cornette (as he seemed to do often tonight), jumped on the apron, while Justin Credible was about to jump in with the Singapore cane. Before he could, The Bees grabbed Credible by the legs and pulled him out of the ring, as the Coliseum erupted into cheers. A few minutes later, Bastien tagged back in and applied a Boston Crab to “Beautiful” Bobby, who didn’t look too beautiful, as he was covered in blood. Eaton tapped out to the Crab, which brought another big pop from the crowd, as The Redheads celebrated a huge win! The Bees applauded from the aisle, as Cornette flipped out over his team’s loss! ****½
7) Mil Mascaras finally scored a pinfall over “The Big O.” Bob Orton, Sr. The luchador was definitely focused in this one, hardly giving Orton an inch. He hit several beautiful flying body presses throughout the bout. Orton got busted open and was reeling. A finally body press off the top put Orton down for the 1-2-3. The crowd cheered huge at seeing “The Man of 1,000 Masks” finally pin his rival! **½
8) Sabu defeated Southern Heavyweight champ Dan Severn by countout in a non-title bout. The homicidal, suicidal, genocidal maniac attacked “The Beast” early on, trying to hurt Severn before his uncle, The Sheik, gets his title rematch. With a distraction from Abdullah Farouk, Sabu brought a chair in and executed an Arabian facebuster. Severn rolled out of the ring for a breather. Richard Hutton went over to coach him on the floor. Suddenly The Sheik ran down to ringside and nailed Hutton from behind. Farouk was again distracting Tommy Gilbert, as Sheik grabbed the chair Sabu had used moments before and nailed Severn twice with it. Sheik retreated to the locker room. Gilbert turned around and saw Severn on the floor and counted him out, giving Sabu the win. Frank Gotch came down afterwards, with his face bandaged up from Sheik’s fireball, to check on his fallen Team RPW members. ½*
9) Despite an arm injury, Nick Bockwinkel scored a big submission win over Giant Baba. Bockwinkel went for his sleeper early on, but Baba got to the ropes. Baba hit two dreaded neckbreaker drops. Bockwinkel kicked out of one, and on the second, Bobby Heenan put his foot on the bottom rope. Bockwinkel came back and worked over Baba’s ribs, applying the abdominal stretch several times. Baba made a comeback and went for an impressive dropkick, but missed and crashed hard into the mat. He landed badly on his leg, which Bock took advantage of, applying the figure-four leglock. Baba’s leg was too badly hurt from the landing and the Japanese giant tapped out. ****
10) Two more Heenan Family members were in the main event, as The Masked Superstar and King Kong Bundy put the World Tag Team titles on the line against former champs The Road Warriors. This was a back-and-forth bout between these four behemoths. The Legion of Doom hit a modified Doomsday Device on Bundy, with Animal lifting the big man slightly off his feet in a bear hug, rather than putting him on his shoulders. Superstar made the save for his partner. Superstar executed two spinning neckbreakers on Animal, but couldn’t keep him down. Later, Hawk had Bundy in the corner and went for a running shoulder tackle, but Bundy dodged it, causing Hawk to hit his shoulder hard on the ringpost. Bundy went for a cover, but only got two. Bobby “The Brain” Heenan got involved, distracting Paul Morton, while Superstar hit Animal in the back of the head with one of the tag title belts on the floor. The Road Warriors came back and Animal hit a big splash for a close one on Bundy. Bundy rolled out of the ring and Animal followed him. In the ring, Superstar stomped on Hawk’s hurt shoulder, then went after “Precious” Paul Ellering for no apparent reason. This distracted Morton. Heenan went around the ring to hit Animal with a chair, but Animal turned around in time and booted “The Brain” in the stomach. Animal grabbed the chair and blasted Bundy with it. Unfortunately, Morton happened to turn away from Superstar and Ellering to see Animal’s actions and called for the bell, disqualifying Hawk and Animal, and giving the champs the win. Fans were not happy about this one! Superstar and Bundy grabbed Heenan and the belts and made their way to the locker room, while The L.O.D. and Ellering stared them down from the ring. ***½

Highlights from USWA Championship Wrestling on October 13:
• Perhaps the biggest news was the announcement that Antonio Inoki will defend the USWA World Heavyweight title on November 2 in Nashville against Nick Bockwinkel! There is so much history between these two men in their battles, primarily over the championship. This will be Bockwinkel’s first shot at the belt, since losing the title to Inoki in March at the Mid-South Coliseum. • Another video aired from Texas, featuring “Dastardly” Danny Doring. This time Doring was in a “Texas bar”, sporting a cowboy hat and boots and trying to fit in with the locals. Bill Apter again interviewed Doring, who claimed that he wanted to get to know the people he would soon be representing. The Texans weren’t too fond of Doring’s attitude and chased him, Cousin Luke, and Virgil out of the bar! • Texas champ Greg Valentine was interviewed about the title match and “The Hammer” stated that whether the Texas fans like him or not, he is their champion and he will put down Doring down, just like he has other recent opponents. Lance Russell than asked manager Capt. Lou Albano about his tag team that will soon be debuting. The Captain said that with things heating up in the tag team picture, his Killer Bees would beat all the competition, but especially The Killer Bees—as in B. Brian Blair and “Jumping” Jim Brunzell. Russell asked when Albano’s Bees would debut and the Capt. said they would arrive soon.
The USWA comes back to Dallas and the world famous Sportatorium on October 19! • Two popular tag teams will do battle for the first time, as The Road Warriors do battle with “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka and Bruiser Brody! The Legion of Doom certainly want another shot at The Masked Superstar and King Kong Bundy, after their disappointing DQ loss. But of course Snuka and Brody are hoping to get back on their feet and get in the hunt. Which team will the fans side with? Remember, Brody is often quite popular in the Texas arenas. • In another big tag team bout, The Midnight Express take on The Killer Bees. Both teams got involved in the other’s bout on the last card. This bout could be very important in determining future challengers for the World Tag Team titles. • Former World Heavyweight champion Ed “Strangler” Lewis will wrestle his first bout since losing the gold, when he takes on Bob Orton, Sr. Lewis is hoping to get back in the title hunt, but don’t look past Orton, as “The Big O.” has two victories (one by DQ and the other by pinfall) over Lewis this year. • A huge six-man tag team bout will take place, as Heenan Family members Nick Bockwinkel and USWA World Tag Team champions The Masked Superstar and King Kong Bundy will face the undefeated Rikidozan, Giant Baba, and “The Man of 1,000 Masks” Mil Mascaras. The popular international wrestlers continue their feud with the Heenan Family. Bockwinkel and Mascaras will certainly want to face off, due to their heated rivalry. Superstar put out Baba twice this year with neck injuries. Many USWA fans are interested at the possibility of Bockwinkel and Rikidozan locking up for the first time. Remember, back in July when Baba and Bock met at Budokan Hall in Japan, Bockwinkel and Rikidozan had some heated words. Who will win this huge six-man war? • Greg “The Hammer” Valentine will make his first defense of the USWA Texas championship against the wannabe Texan “Dastardly” Danny Doring. Doring is looking to continue his recent success, having injured Koko B. Ware and S.D. Jones, as well as pinning Billy Red Lyons in a tag bout, thanks to his Danaconda. But Valentine is also on a roll. Who will leave the Sportatorium with the gold? • The main event will be a huge rematch, as Dan “The Beast” Severn will defend the USWA Southern Heavyweight title against former champion The Sheik! These two had one of the bloodiest bouts in USWA history, when Severn became the first man to pin The Sheik in a one-on-one bout. But will Sheik and Sabu’s attack on Severn on the last card, as well as Sheik’s quick work of Frank Gotch affect “The Beast”? All this plus, Justin Credible takes on Sabu in what will certainly be a wild brawl! The Flying Redheads in action, and a special appearance by the high flying Argentinian—Antonino Rocca!
